Who we are
We are an independent, member driven associated created by and for those who work on the web. Legally, Web Matters Ltd is a private company limited by guarantee – you can view our Companies House record here.
We are not a registered charity.
Our day to day operations are run by a committee which was elected at our first AGM in September 2017. All of our committee members are unpaid volunteers. In addition to our committee members, we have additional volunteers contributing their time and expertise, for example by running our website, contributing to blog posts and other content, or running one of our fledgling local chapters.
In order to keep Web Matters running from day to day, the Committee will access and use the personal data you provide us. What that data is, and what we use it for, is detailed below.

What information we collect, and why
We will use your name, email address, and the postal address to keep an internal roster of members. We need to do this for legal reasons as part of our incorporation as a company limited by guarantee.
We will use your email address to communicate with you for membership and information purposes. We will not use your contact details for any marketing purpose, nor will we pass them to any third party.
We will use the information you provide in the “about you” section of the membership signup page to gain a greater understanding of what our membership looks like and what their needs are. Again, this information will not be passed to any third party.
Our web site sets two cookies: a session cookie to record your visit, which expires half an hour after your visit, and a Wordfence cookie for site protection and security, which expires 24 hours after your visit.
Who else processes your data?
We use Membermojo to process membership signups. You can read about their data protection standards here.
Where is your data?
The humans seeing your data – currently all in the UK – do so only for membership purposes.
Our web site is hosted in the AWS London zone and the database server is in the AWS Ireland zone. Membermojo data is located in London.
How long do we keep your data?
Although we’re a brand new organisation, we intend to keep membership data only for as long as you choose to be a member. We will keep lapsed memberships on file for six months after expiration just in case you forgot to renew.
What about my rights?
If you would like to invoke your rights over your data, whether that is cancelling your membership, removing your information from our internal membership roster, or filing a subject access request, please contact email@example.com
If you file a subject access request, we may require proof of identity from you to verify that you are who you say you are. This information will be retained on UK file storage only for as long as it takes to respond to the subject access request and will be promptly deleted.
